Budget Compass purchase capture: privacy policy

Effective October 30, 2026. This policy covers version 0.9.9 of the browser extension, not the separate Budget Compass desktop application's optional services.

Purpose and information used

The extension reads purchase-history information from supported Amazon.com order-history pages and reportaproblem.apple.com so you can export purchase details and import them into Budget Compass. It processes order identifiers, purchase dates, amounts, item descriptions, merchant/source information and supported Amazon refund details. Purchase descriptions can themselves contain sensitive information.

The extension can access page content on the sites matched in its manifest. It does not request browser API access to passwords, cookies, payment-card numbers or general browsing history. It identifies supported tabs through messages to its content scripts; it may try other open tabs when the active tab does not answer. It does not export a list of your tabs.

When capture runs

Opening the extension popup starts capture after a supported page answers. Changing the capture-since date starts another capture. Amazon capture may load additional order-history and refund pages in hidden frames using your existing signed-in session. Apple capture can move through purchase-history pages. These are requests to the merchant's own website; the extension does not send your purchase data to a Budget Compass server.

Local storage and retention

The current capture is held in memory while the popup is open. The extension saves a separate capture watermark and your chosen capture-since date for each source in extension-local browser storage. These preferences persist between sessions.

When you select Save payload, the purchase payload is placed in local browser storage for handoff to the save tab. That tab attempts to remove the pending payload before parsing it. If the tab never opens or removal fails, the payload may remain until it is overwritten or extension data is cleared. The save tab holds the loaded payload in memory until closed.

Exported JSON files remain in your Downloads folder or chosen location until you delete them. They are ordinary files, not encrypted by the extension. Browser, operating-system backup or folder-sync features you configure may also retain copies. Importing a file into the desktop application creates separate local data governed by that application's settings.

Sharing and use

The extension has no developer-operated data-collection endpoint, advertising, analytics or remote-code service. It does not sell purchase information or use it for advertising, creditworthiness or lending decisions. Purchase content is used only for the capture/export feature. The extension itself does not send data to AI providers. Any later sharing through the separate desktop application is controlled there, not by this extension.

Budget Compass purchase capture's use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.

Your controls

Close the popup to stop receiving a capture, and close the save tab when finished. Remove the extension through chrome://extensions to remove its extension-local data; delete exported JSON files separately. You can restrict the extension's site access using Chrome's controls, which may prevent capture. No merchant password needs to be provided to Budget Compass.

Support and changes

For support or privacy questions, email alec.w.byrd1997@gmail.com. Do not send passwords, purchase exports, order identifiers, bank records or other private financial data. Describe the issue with invented examples. If you contact support, your email address and the information you choose to send are used to respond to your request and are handled through the maintainer's Gmail account. This page will be updated if the extension's data practices change.
